I always try to fix things around the house, as long as I know how to do it, or it doesn't seem to be that difficult to learn. I do always keep a list of reputable contractors' numbers handy "just in case" I end up getting in over my head.

I always keep in mind to make sure that I don't attempt jobs that I know I'm not capable of doing/learning. I have a list of reliable contractors that I can contact in case I get into trouble!

Great tip! It reminds me of Malcolm Gladwell's book, The Tipping Point. During the 90s, the NY city cops addressed petty crimes first -- jumping subway turnstiles, graffiti, etc. The thinking was those who commit small crimes are likely to commit big crimes.
