7 Things to Leave Off Your Resume

"Great leadership skills" is like "I enjoy long walks on the beach." OK, great, so does everyone.

Instead, tell a (very short) story about how you have great leadership skills. It will be clear to the reader that you have great leadership skills.

I would also suggest to not include any personal info at all. I don't want to know your age, whether you have kids, that you just got divorced, have aging parents, live 10 minutes from the office, or that you like skydiving. I'm always amazed that any candidate would list anything personal on their resume.

Rule of thumb for resumes? I want information about your job experience and educational background. Anything beyond that is extra information that I'm probably not reading.

I happen to know that in France and I believe in other parts of Europe, it is not only standard but expected that you include a picture with your resume or application. I am not completely sure why, but perhaps that accounts for some of the confusion on this? Personally I think its a bad idea too, and it opens the door for discrimination.

While I think some of these things "to be left off" are dead-on but others seem to be about a matter of preference/situation. Sure your ability to type is probably assumed for many administrative/general business positions but if I am hiring for a secretarial or other word-processing heavy job I'd want to know your wpm and that you know what you are doing there.

The key I guess is "know your audience" as is often the case in such things.
