A resume cover letter is where you sum up all your biggest achievements such as experiences and educational background. With a stroke of a few sentences, the employer will get to know more about you without the hassles of reading through every bits and pieces of yourself. When you address the employer by name, you’re in essence telling him that you know who he is and you recognize his authority. You’re basically saying that you want to have a healthy working relationship with him.

Yes of course if your cover letter clearly highlights that you have read the job description and know at least something unique about the organisation, it is a good step in the right direction towards getting a job interview.

I believe it takes only 5 to 10 minutes to write a simple cover letter. So I never skip writing a cover letter for a job position I really want.

...and no wonder, because we're just one of many states suffering a severe job shortage at the moment. Which is why information like this (and in your new book) is especially timely.

You're exactly right, too -- job seekers need to focus on what the employer needs, and how we can solve her/his PROBLEM. Especially important in this economy... and especially difficult to remember, sometimes, when it's so easy to over-focus on our OWN problem (e.g., being unemployed!)
