What It's Like to Make a Job Offer

I interviewed candidates on & off for several months and just couldn't find someone. (Note: company of 25, you're your own HR department.) I was growing discouraged, to say the least. But I was thrilled when I finally interviewed our last candidate, and even more thrilled to give him the offer, and when he accepted with enthusiasm! Definitely worth the wait, seeing as he was a great fit for the role.

I myself have been the deliver-er of the unexpected refusal from time to time. Though I mean the prospective employer no ill will, I think it's important, as you pointed out, that the match be good for both the employer AND the employee. And like with any interview process, sometimes you get down to the wire and you have a decision to make, and you make another decision based upon criteria that the other party cannot possibly understand or know about. I mean frankly, it's none of my business why you didn't pick me for your job, so why is it anyone's business why I didn't pick them for my employer? I have always wondered why a respectful and tactful refusal warrants one of the following responses:

1.) Pushback - this is so weird. I think an employer who recognizes what AAM does which is that the match should exist on both sides should respect that I've said no, and not counter with a "well what if we did this - well what if we did that?" Plus it sort of conveys desperation, which is not a real endearing trait in a future employer.

2.) Indignation at refusal - Ummm....when I don't get a job after interviewing, though my time was as valuable as the prospective employer's, generally I don't even get a "thanks for stopping by" rejection letter - and nobody ever gets a "no thanks" call. I may feel a little unhappy about the rejection from the prospective employer, but well - I'll live.

Anyway, just my two cents. Interesting to note how the other half sees being turned down.
