I was down to 4 finalists for a position. With the economy down and unemployment up, I had more qualified candidates than ever and could cherry pick the best. Unfortunately, I had such top people, I couldn't choose. It honestly came down to who sent thoughtful cover letters and who followed up with the interview by confirming the appointments and sending thank you letters. It does make a difference if they are custom versus one-liner form letters. When I'm looking for the one thing that sets a person apart, all else being equal, that's what I look for - detail oriented people with a view of the big picture.
