In business, one man's "fight" may be another man's (or woman's) refusal to violate ethics or forgo personal integrity.

Yes, it's easy to avoid the "fight". But what if someone had not avoided a fight with Bernie Madoff, with Kenneth Lay, or with any of many thousands of lesser personalities in the corporate world?

Are ethics and integrity worth the hassle?

What compromise to ethics or the law is appropriate?

What the boss really expects is that you are professional enough to resolve your conflicts rather than create havoc that he/she will then have to undo inorder to get on with business. The boss is not pretending anything; he/she is expecting everything.

I must agree with you 100 percent. Its a good idea to avoid any confrontation involving your friends or co workers if possible. If you are involved in one stay calm when you are confromnted by your supervisor or manager.

"They’d rather pretend that the team is filled with happy compatriots"------

Pretend is a key word for disinterest by the boss. A good boss will be sensitive to feuds under his/her nose (without being told) and merely ask both the participants (separately, not in some group meeting) to calm down and reconcile.

But the author's advice to not get in workplace fights in the first place is good advice. Don't get in bar fights either. You never know how disastrous the fallout can become. You can get pounded, and/or you can win but be prosecuted. None of it is worth either the risk or the hassle.
