Another good reason not to go nutso...it's not professional. As a HR representative, professionalism is a MUST at ALL times. I can never say that enough. No matter what actions you take on any subject, remain professional. HR sets the tone for an office and company. What tone do you want to set? Plain and simple.

Hi

By being rude or indifferent clearly theres nothing to gain, infact one should be more polite at that point to see how s/he can be retained in the job, and thus save the company from lot of cost/time to hire a replacement.

If not that, a friendlier exit will make him/her sell the company brand image & to make references of people from his profession.

Likewise, if he leaves in good taste & doesnt like the new assignment, he himself may think of a come back.

Well, so many good aspects to it; who would like risk these...

Another reason to consider is the exiting employee will let his or her colleagues know how the company treated them on their way out. If it is negative it will hurt the company's reputation and future recruitment efforts.

Another reason why not to trash an employee is the exiting employee will undoubtley let other colleagues know how he was treated, which will in turn give a bad reputation for the company. Which will hurt future recruitment efforts.

Bill,

In my experience it's very common. Some people can't seem to separate out personal from professional.

I changed jobs 2 years ago. My supervisor and I got along fine; I wasn't leaving because of him. Yet, from the moment I gave him my 2 weeks notice until the exit interview, he quit speaking to me. I think he took it personally.

Or as my dad explained it to me in my youth: The skinny geek who lives down the street may grow up to be a loan officer at the bank. Be nice!
