Tweet Share on Facebook December 31, 2009 Comment (1)As you lay the foundation for 2010, I encourage you to consider a question that seldom finds its way into our New Year’s planning, but has the potential to change your life. The question is: “What stories will I tell this year?”

Do a Year-End Review of Your Career
Tweet Share on Facebook December 30, 2009 Comment (1)As we near the end of 2009 (frankly, a year many of us won’t mind saying goodbye to), now is a good time to evaluate your work and work life. Even if you feel less than great about your career right now, it’s always a smart idea to take a moment and consider how your past actions brought you to where you are today. It’s a chance to not only make sense of it all, but to prepare for the challenges of the new year ahead.

Tweet Share on Facebook December 22, 2009 Comment (1)Way to go, feds. Thanks for limiting tarmac wait-times to three hours. How to Get Paid When You're an Independent Contractor
Tweet Share on Facebook December 17, 2009 CommentIn July, I was laid off from my HR job (true layoff--lack of work). When we finalized my layoff, my boss had mentioned the possibility of assisting in a contractor-type capacity after I was laid off. I signed a contract negotiating pay at about 130 percent of my previous hourly rate in order to cover taxes/benefits/etc. In August, she asked me to work for one day on a challenging recruitment. I completed 9 hours of work. I submitted my hours to my boss immediately and requested pay by invoice.

What Do We Do Now?
Tweet Share on Facebook December 15, 2009 Comment (4)Everyone pretty much agrees that small businesses will be the salvation of our current employment crisis. Small businesses hire more people than large companies. People are moving away from large companies because they can have more impact and more fun in smaller ones. They want the experience of small-company innovation and the energy that results from working in such an environment.
