[See 10 career regrets you may have too late.]
- Be patient.
- But exude a sense of urgency.
- Use your intuition.
- But don’t trust your gut feelings.
- None of us is as smart as all of us.
- But listen carefully to the lone dissenter.
- Establish systems.
- But beware of a stifling bureaucracy.
- Work your plan.
- But improvise.
- Celebrate diversity.
- But discourage factions.
- Rigidly focus.
- But be flexible and multitask.
- Value people.
- But emphasize employment at will in your handbooks.
- Have an open door.
- But discourage interruptions.
- Document employee relations problems.
- But realize that documentation may be used against you.
- Balance family and work.
- But make yourself indispensable to your employer.
- Work can be fun.
- But some jobs are inherently stressful.
- Get it done now.
- But take time to think.
- Be non-discriminatory.
- But hire a diverse team.
- Follow the rules.
- But don’t hesitate to break rules that are unnecessary.
