30 Lessons Learned at Management Workshops

February 26, 2010 RSS Feed Print

I have no doubt that these 30 things were mentioned at various management workshops throughout the United States this week:

[See 10 career regrets you may have too late.]

  1. Be patient.
  2. But exude a sense of urgency.
  3. Use your intuition.
  4. But don’t trust your gut feelings.
  5. None of us is as smart as all of us.
  6. But listen carefully to the lone dissenter.
  7. Establish systems.
  8. But beware of a stifling bureaucracy.
  9. Work your plan.
  10. But improvise.
  11. Celebrate diversity.
  12. But discourage factions.
  13. Rigidly focus.
  14. But be flexible and multitask.
  15. Value people.
  16. But emphasize employment at will in your handbooks.
  17. Have an open door.
  18. But discourage interruptions.
  19. Document employee relations problems.
  20. But realize that documentation may be used against you.
  21. Balance family and work.
  22. But make yourself indispensable to your employer.
  23. Work can be fun.
  24. But some jobs are inherently stressful.
  25. Get it done now.
  26. But take time to think.
  27. Be non-discriminatory.
  28. But hire a diverse team.
  29. Follow the rules.
  30. But don’t hesitate to break rules that are unnecessary.

Jorge,

I think you are missing the point of the author. This isn't a rambling list, but rather a cohesive statement that requires filtering. If you are in management, you are always trying to glean 4 or 5 new things each day.

While the author could have expounded upon each point. Maybe put up some cheesy clip art, it is left to the reader to say "Oh, I can attach value to that one... nope this one doesn't fit"

Cheers,

Dan

Not sure if you had too little to say so or not enought time to hit your deadline. Seems like you just rambled off a 30 item list post. Every blogger knows that posting a list is an easy way to get it done fast and people tend to read them. (In this case, quickly scan it to realize the information isn't all that useful.)

Job hunters have time on their hands, but they need some real advice, content, job hunt trinkets to get them to their next home. Here's a much better list post. It's called 10 Things to Do If You Have Been Fired or Laid Off at http://www.careerjockey.org/10-things-to-do-if-you-have-been-fired-or-laid-off/. Mary Elizabeth Bradford, one of the writers that puts some serious time into her work, shared that one with my readers and is a much better use of your time. This one just runs out of gas fast.

I guess I'm a little testy today. Sorry if I offended anyone.

Trust your people.

But be prepared to second guess at every opportunity. ;)
