You can have this supervisor's reference checked, too- they may not say anything at all due to policy and you can get some peace of mind, and stop worrying about what they may tell people who call. It's very unethical and probably illegal to create false documents about an

employee. It's unfortunate that anyone would stoop to this type of behavior.

If you needed to terminate an employee you don't need to have a reason at all'

as most work relationships are employment at will. You could say that the

position wasn't a good fit for the employee or the department was going through

a reorganization. If the employee knows what happened he could have grounds

for a law suit.

I always find it useful to get the email addresses of references. In today's world many high level managers and executives are too busy to answer a call (domestic or international) but can be very receptive if they are emailed questions.
