Interpersonal skills are so important since people are complex and everyone works differently. Listening definitely is at the core of it. I took a class on a similiar subject about managing up and across once and it was one of the most beneficial classes I've ever taken. The professor was a retired executive and offered many of her own stories relating to the subject. One of her lessons was to always ask and clarify expectations from your boss and colleagues.
