How to Fend Off Job-Search Addiction

The advice on jobcircle.com can be helpful at times, but many times is so contradictory that people could be left feeling confused regarding how to search for a job. I have read so much advice on jobcircle.com telling people to put in a normal 40 hour work week looking for jobs (if not more). Obviously it would not be possible to network for half of the week and look for jobs on line for half the week for months on end (or sometimes years). How many people does the average person know and how much money does the average unemployed person have to dedicate to transportation, cups of coffee and career fairs that all cost money? The best a person can do is to take in all information and decide individually what is best for them because most job advice given will be conflicting job advice.

Andrew,

Thank you for this article; it is perfectly aligned with what I constantly tell career-seekers about about being strategic about their career (but not overdoing it). I have seen so many people apply to jobs that they don't want ...only to waste their own time and the company's time. Moreover, even when they get the job, they often end up leaving it because of their stress level.

My question is how could you be best utilizing your time? So, my recommendation would be to spend less time on the job boards and more time developing skills that can outlive any jobs and help you be successful throughout your career. For example, one skill that I coach people in is how to leave their leadership legacy, so they have a higher liklihood of advancing in their career and making a real difference in their communities.

To your career success!
