One problem I've found is that most companies now ask candidates to complete an online assessment after the initial resume screening. Aside from the fact these assessments are generally very broads (and tend to lean closer to questions more appropriate for hourly positions, as opposed to roles higher up within the organization) one of the mandatory questions which is asked is what is your desired salary. You have to answer it, otherwise the system will not let you complete the assessment. I was in this situation myself recently. Since I was forced to give an answer, I gave my absolute bare minimum figure and now have to negotiate it up; explaining that my expectations are actually considerably higher - and that my bare minimum figure was given a) with the understanding that regular bonuses, etc. would be giving in addition; and b) now that I've been in to several interviews and have a much better understanding of the scope of the position I feel that a greater figure is more appropriate.

Given that technology now enables employers to force candidates into giving an answer and - as previous comments have stated - recruiters routinely weed out people who don't give a figure up front or who ask for a detailed salary history, what approach do you recommend? If no guideline is actually given by the initial job posting, what should someone do - give their absolute minimum figure like I did in order to secure and interview, or gamble on providing a number you'd be much more comfortable with (which would avoid having to negotiate later on, but which might loose you the chance of an interview in the first place)?

I've always heard it's a big No no to ask what a job pays when in an interview so why is it ok for a company to ask for salary requirements or history?! It's not fair that they can bring up salary when the job seeker can't!!

I have been doing a lot of interviewing lately, and I have found that at least 90% of companies bluntly ask you for your salary requirements right up front as part of their screening process. If you beat around the bush, the HR person stats getting very upset and then bluntly asks you how much you made at your last job. Then has the nerve to ask you what the $ figure is composed of

(base, commission, bonus, etc.). This is part of the screening process before you even make it to the next round for a telephone interview to even talk about the job. The HR screening process has become very rude and is extremely frustrating!!! What happen to the good ol days when HR were pleasant to job candidates?

Years ago, before I had the experience I have now, I wasted my time by interviewing for positions that said they pay 'industry standard' or 'based on experience' and ended up offering way less than I was interested in accepting. For that and other reasons, I expect a certain amount for my time, effort, energy and expertise and nothing less.

There's a point in your career where you can't take less than you're worth for anything. That would just lead to a new job search as soon as you get your first paycheck from a new company.

It's certainly more difficult if you're not currently employed so check out salary sites to gauge the market your interviewing for.

Some companies will require applicants to fill out applications online where their forms require that one fills out the salary requirement field. A range cannot be entered, only one salary number.

While i have yet to interview, it's been the latest trend for a recruiter to ask you what your salary range is via email.

I don't mind giving a range but there a some many job postings i respond to within my field.

I have a range and it's hit or miss based on that range.
