Great article! It's a "How To" manual for internships that every intern should read.
Good emphasis on learning from co-workers and asking for feedback and advice. We emphasize both mentor and what we call "reverse-mentor" relationships. Many times interns feel they are indeed tied to their role of making coffee and copies. But in most cases that couldn't be further from the truth.
An internship is a fantastic opportunity to learn. If one is indeed stuck doing menial tasks, ok, it happens sometimes. But you're not powerless! Create your own internship within your internship by learning on your own... ask questions... network... develop a mentor relationship with an experienced co-worker.
Be proactive and assertive about learning as much as you can in your internship. It sounds cliche but you are surrounded by learning opportunities in your office... none of which have to do with the copy or coffee machine.

Hi Alison, this is one of the best articles I have seen on how to succeed as an intern -- you really capture the nuance of how a positive attitude and work ethic can help an intern gain trust and ultimately a more rewarding internship experience.
I especially enjoyed your point on how excelling at menial tasks is a critical way for an intern to prove they are capable of delivering in the professional world and to get rewarded with higher level work. In our research we have found that an additional reason this is so critical, is that many employers are anxious about getting a positive return for the work they put in to hire and train their intern. A month of reliable, well-written, and very organized work, makes the employer feel like their time and the company's time has been respected, and will create a comfortability in which they are typically more willing to assign higher level and more creative projects, and which typically require more training.
Something else that we have found students can take better advantage of, is staying in touch with employers after the internship is over. Whether this is helping them to find their next intern, connecting with them on Linkedin, or writing a positive blog about the experience and getting it published in the school newspaper, anything that adds value to an employer will make that candidate continue to stand out.
Thanks for sharing all the great advice -- this is a critical time for students!
