Fantastic tips here. Ones I've honestly never heard of! Love the LinkedIN events tips (deciding you want to speak publicly is one thing, finding the opps always seems to be the stumbling block) and I will certainly be checking out Quora.com. Thanks

I in a partime job sometimes 1 to 3 days a week, still looking for a full time in receptionist/administrative/clerk position I have been looking for 18 months or more. It seems that there are many career opportunities I wonder if that is a real opening?

While I was caring for my parents, (four years or more), I took temporary jobs in the clerical field including customer service, office support and data entry. I was flexible and reliable enough to fill in at a moments notice and take over most any office position that came my way. Now that my parents have passed on, I am looking for a permanent position for myself. I get the feeling that most companies feel that a temporary job history is unstable. Being flexible, reliable and skilled in the administrative field would be a plus if I were considering eligible candidates. It makes me wonder how much real experience the person hiring has.

I have been looking for work for 10 months now. My background is being an administrative secretary in health care (20+years) Hospital closed. I've found I get leads for RNs, Unit Secretaries, etc. - not what I do. Resumes do get ignored for nursing unit secretary openings that I have applied for. I'm looking into changing fields slightly - home health care. 2 companies I interviewed with decided not to fill the position! Frustrating! A friend who went to an agency was met with "All these years in one job? Don't think you will earn that kind of money here!" I had gone to the same agency & found this woman rude and obnoxious! Will look into another agency if I don't find anything soon. Best wishes in the job search!

I stayed too long in a job I loved, only to lose it after 23 years due to re-structuring and downsizing. My skills are varied in the customer service and staff support field, and while I have computer skills they are pretty much limited to what I needed to know to do my job. My problem at this point is that I can't seem to translate everything I've done and accomplished over the years into a resume that would spark a potential employers interest. I don't get responses even from the most basic typist jobs! Does staying in the same job too long put a negative spin on your employment history? I see it as an asset - loyalty and a commitment to the employer.

I agree with Angela... the shotgun approach (lots of small pellets at once) is an effective approach for front line and IT job seekers, however, senior management (VP on up) can not seem desperate and be seen and heard from constantly. Looks as if we are trying too hard to prove our value. At this level, our past and present accomplishments must speak for us. In my experience, word of mouth referrals from clients, employers, peers in our professional circles work the best to secure a job or project. MEB

Isn't there a time when joining more social networks, continually updating your LinkedIn status, etc. make you seem desparate and over-zealous.....almost desparate? I am working toward the next level of leadership in Healthcare where the majority of leadership do not participate in social media sites nor would they subscribe to a blog at their level (VP, CEO, CFO, etc.). This information sounds applicable more toward technilogical related positions.
