As a recruiter for a staffing firm dedicated to accounting and finance professionals, I think this advice is top notch, especially for those that are unemployed. If you get yourself out there into SOMETHING, you automatically make yourself more valuable to other employers. The time will come when you can jump and head for that path that you're interested in and you'll have gained something from the experience... though Liz has an excellent point as far as having an advisor help you prepare for the interview and job search.

Good point, Liz. I think that's another place where people get stuck when pondering a career change - feeling like they will need to start over completely from scratch, when in fact they typically have many transferable skills they have developed over the years.

It might also be helpful to have a trusted advisor go over your resume and "interview" you, looking for skills and experience that are relevant to your desired field. Often candidates are better prepared for transition than they realize.
