This is terrific info. I'm currently Director of Communications and Marketing at Big Non-Profit, but have recently had some fear put in my day-to-day job about whether I'll still have it in the near future.
Thankfully, I've already started doing many of the things you mention above. Sure, it's a scary thing to contemplate after being raised to think that I'd have a lifelong career. But boy, can it be exciting!
