I teach a great deal about gender communication in my interpersonal class and am going to use this as a discussion point. The findings, at first glance, surprised me since older gender comm research reveals that men are more succinct communicators (and more to the point) and women nurture the professional relationship first. How many times have you thought about going to a networking event, perhaps a speaker at lunch or an early morning networking group and you've thought 'It's better I'm at my desk, getting through that 'to do' list.' Reality check, that list is never going away, and the value of getting out there and building your personal brand, being a brand ambassador for your firm and developing new face-to-face relationships trumps clearing your email, checking things off that never-ending list. Commit to going to one event a week (you'll see those events are full of men who made networking a priority.)
