Sounds familiar but I have a twist to the above. I am stuck with cleaning up the mess for my lazy co-worker, I have to do it or I cannot do my job. I cannot leave it undone because then I am not doing my job. This co-worker’s poor work only effects me and having meetings with the sloppy co-worker has made her more sloppy, there are no consequences, the boss actually feels sorry for her. This co-worker retaliates to my complaints of poor work by putting objects, lotion and God knows what else in my food and drink. This person has tampered with my computer and papers in my office as well. I bring attention to this problem but the boss refuses to believe the co-worker would stoop to such levels. I have been on the receiving end of sloppy work, tamperings and now possibly ingesting unsafe substances for more than a year and the boss has the nerve to ask my why I am being mean? I am very unhappy about the situation and feel in danger. It has escalated to the point where I now feel in unsafe with eating or drinking in the office. How can I make the boss understand that he needs to deal with this problem before she actually poisons me (on purpose or by accident)? I love the job and office but I cannot let the bad employee push me out. What can be done about this kind of slacker?

Great blog, it is interesting to read that employers are keeping slackers on the job. I have had situations where the most unprofessional person on the staff (curses, throws fits, talks rudely on the phone, has a negative attitude) is a valued employee because she is hard to replace for the job she does. I wish someone would feel sorry for me! Kidding aside, I truly believe employers are always looking at the bottom line, and if you don't fit the bill or are too "expensive", you are out the door. I am hanging in there, been unemployed for seven months. Have met some wonderful people and I know my value will be recognized.

Good article. I've worked with quite a few slackers and I've seen each one of these examples. Quite a few people have hung on to their jobs because someone felt sorry for them.

If it is a sales-oriented place, maybe the "slacker" is just working there to get out of the house and away from the kids part of the week, has a top-tier credit card account with the company, and so spends so much money there (maybe his or her spouse even pays the bills, primarily, and they just have a joint account) that it is like employing them for free, or something?

Worked for one high-end sales enterprise some time ago, and the laziest person (this was a straight commission job, too, mind you, go figure) came and shopped until she dropped on her days off.

In other words, they were getting some benefit from her, even though the effort was much lower than anyone else.

Probably had the hubby's ultra-platinum/gold/bronze/whoop-dee-doo level charge account with the company, no doubt.

In that case, they know they're not going anywhere.

Dumb!!!! ....Chicken!!.... Goober! #2 is definitely a lousy excuse and manager is to blame for awful & brainless employees! Betcha manager don't even know how to spell and don't even know his/her job title!....lol!!!!

I'd add that some managers don't deal with underperforming coworkers simply because they don't know how to have that 'hard conversation'. They don't know how to; separate behaviours from personality traits or characteristics, separate facts from assumptions, achieve objectivity. In short, they don't know how to deliver constructive criticism in a way the employee finds easy to understand and easy to accept.
