"Scapegoat the economy and bad luck"?
There are only so many openings. Every time someone gets a job, that means someone else (actually a lot of someone elses) DON'T get it. This is a zero-sum game. Even if everyone were to follow all this advice, there would still be "winners" and "losers" because there aren't enough jobs for everyone. It's like the idiot politicians who claim that we wouldn't need a social safety net or decent wages for low-level workers if everybody just worked hard and got an education, without acknowledging that there would still need to be people to sweep the floors and pick the vegetables.
The economy and bad luck exist. It does no one any good to pretend they don't, and this article, like most job-search advice, reeks of denial, victim-blaming, and irrational exuberance.

That story has a lot of sexist overtones. Wife? Being responsible? Sounds a lot like the 1970's commercial, "Ring around the collar". When are people going to realize that women are not chattle for men?

A lot of job applicants, especially older folks returning to the job market after being laid off, may not like reading things like, "You have nothing to gain by looking for a job you don’t even want." However, we should realize that hiring managers don't want to hire applicants who a) don't really want the job, b) only want the job for the paycheck, and c) do not have a job history which demonstrates their compatibility with a job. The adage, "desperation is the worst cologne," does not just apply to the dating world. Folks who are desperate and adopt job hunting and career planning strategies which cater to that desperation are only hurting themselves.

All fine unless you're over forty and definitely NOT a computer nerd. I have no use for facebook, myspace, twitter, or any of that rot. I can use all the PC buzzwords (or are they now "keywords"?) and prove expertise, reliability, performance and an outstanding work ethic, but at the end of the day my age is a point of discrimination. Not that it can be proven, however.

I thought this article made lots of good common sense except for one point.
The author states, "You have nothing to gain by looking for a job you don’t even want." This may well be true in a good economic climate, but right now getting a job you LIKE is irrelevant. Receiving a paycheck is what's important.
I have skills as a web designer, graphic artist, office worker and manager. I've been looking for full-time work for over two years. I'd take whatever I could find even at $13-15 an hour. My dream job may have to wait.
