I laughed at #10 because it appears as though my Boss needs to read this. He never says "thank you".. it's a running joke in my lab where I work. And if by chance you get one from him, you have to share the news with the others! I must say though the rare occasions in which he did thank me for helping, it does feel good and gives a boost to morale. :) In October he sent an email in which he included a smiley face (!) I printed it out and it's next to my computer. There's a first time for everything.

I hope that you're not implying that only young workers check Facebook and spend time on a chat program at work. I know many 'older' workers who are on Facebook, chatting, reading the paper etc. during work hours as well.

Nice post Alison. It's good to remind graduates that politeness and coming from a place of humility can get them far. Being open to learn, open to run fast and jump high will get them in the door and keep them going in their career. While higher education is the next step in skill training, the fact is many need to realize this isn't an automatic in. Many still need to hustle to get in front of employers and make the best impression possible.
