Thank you very much for excellent advice! Recently, I've passed frustrating phone interview and now I can see I could have still had my chance.

The problem is that in our region the phone call is NEVER scheduled in advance and for me as unemployed is "funny" when I am taking the shower or returning with my heavy daily shopping to the fourth floor and phone is ringing. They never offer me another time for appointment and never accept to postpone it to more convenient time. I will try to convince them next time :-)

I liked all of the tips in the article as well as the other comments posted. I am especially impressed with the "dressing" for the interview. Even if over the phone I feel that all of the other tips kind of go with the territory of making a good impression. However, we all are more conscious of ourselves if we are prepared in all ways for the office environment. Thanks to all for the good advice!

how about the employers that post a job requiring

every technology that you can think of but they

only want 3 years of experience for $50K.

How about saying "Expected salary as per / at par with the current market trends" ?

I disagree with RIP. As a hiring manager, we ask about salary expectations to know whether we even have a chance with a candidate- to know if we're even in the ballpark. Right or wrong, I don't get to set the budgets for the positions that I hire for- someone in a corporate office thousands of miles away gives me a number, and it's usually much lower than what I even want to offer candidates, but it is what it is, and then it's my responsibility to find the best candidate for the job who will work within that budget.

Recently in a phone interview, a candidate told our phone screener that salary was "negotiable." She seemed like the perfect candidate in every aspect and we were excited to meet her for an in-person interview. We invited her in for an in-person interview only to discover that her salary expectation was $50,000 over what was budgeted for the position. We had several positions open in our department, but there was really nothing available even close within that range. There was simply no money available to negotiate with, and we all felt really bad that we had found this excellent candidate, but had nothing for her. And it was really unfortunate that we had wasted her time and our time on an in-person interview. It would have been best from the start if she had just told the phone screener what her salary expectations were instead of saying it was negotiable...

Unless you really mean that it's truly negotiable (meaning, you're willing to settle for whatever they've got to offer) it's best to at least give a broad range, and state that you could provide a more defined expectation once you better understand the scope of the work and responsibilities. At least that gives you the chance to increase your asking price if you find out further in the process that the position is more demanding or requires more specialized skill/education, etc.

Most of your phone interview pointers are right on. However, job applicants SHOULD NOT be trapped into disclosing a "desired salary" figure - especially during a phone interview. It is ok to tell the interviewer what salary you are making, but it is NEVER ok to tell him / her what you want. Any discussion / revelation of an offer you will accept is totally premature - especially during a phone interview. The most you should say about a desired salary figure during a phone interview - or on a job application form is the word: "Negotiable."

During an in-person interview, the interviewer is stacking up little invisible packs of money on the table. You have no idea how much money he / she has put there. If you succumb to pressure and "guess" at a figure, you will almost always lose and guess low.

Instead of engaging in a "money guessing game", insist that the decision making interviewer - if he / she is intersted in hiring you - make you a "fair offer." This approach almost always ensures that they will give you ALL of the invisible money.

Even high pressure interviewers won't come back at you more than three times, after you have said: "Make me a fair offer." Just replay a variation of that statement after they come at you each time. After their third attempt, they finally realize they must give you all the invisible money.

In the rare instance where the interviewer just won't give up, you just say: "I know you probably need to fill in a "desired salary" blank on your interview form, but I will never tell you what salary figure I want. I am a reasonable oerson. Just make me a fair offer."
