I am 51 years old and worked in the union my whole life. With the shops closed up .How does one get a job with benefits. Especially when going back to school is out of the question. After, going to interviews and being told you been out of work to long or saying if they can't talk to your previous employer they will not even consider hiring you. I would like to hear from you if you have any suggestions;in which direction to go.

Just want to add (to an already great post) that there are free alternatives to elance and guru which not only eliminate fees of any sort, but that guarantee payment as well. vWorker is one such service. It wasn't that long ago that freelancers underwent a rash of non-paying clients, so the guaranteed payment issue is a pretty important concern.

So is the issue of high-paying jobs now that I think about it. I can't speak for elance and guru because I don't use them, but at vWorker, freelancers can filter out low paying jobs. I recommend that anyone interested in this opportunity compare what is and what isn't available.

Lindsay,

Thanks for a great article. We also have another 1,800 open jobs for your readers at vWorker.com as well. And unlike the two employement marketpalces mentioned above, contractors who complete the contract are guaranteed payment at absolutely no charge. (Those sites charge money if there is a dispute and arbitration is required). Hope to see some of your readers on the site.
