How to Write a Knock-'em-Dead Cover Letter

The issue today for an average job seeker is that when he applies to at least 1000 jobs, he may get a response from one or two companies...

And it is also not practical to write 1000 cover letters in order to do that.. So my question is how to bridge this gap?

As a professional resume writer Luke Roney has made some very valid points. But I do not believe the cover letter is phasing out. I still see people with objectives in thier resumes. Obsolete objectives. In your cover letter you need to grab that persons attention and keep it. This is more and more difficult to do with ADD effecting our population. I always try to put something in my clients cover letters to make them rememberable. I use myself as an example. Most people can not remember peoples names but the idea is make them remember something quirky about you. With myself in my 1 minute elevator speech I point out that I went to Guilford College the Quaker school. They may not remember my name but they associate me as the Quaker. All I need them to do is remember me for something positive and that keeps the resume on the desk.

...I didn't even know about cover letters before today. Thanks for the article! I'll be sure to look more into cover letters before I am legally old enough to work and need a job.

when I apply to a job on Craigslist, most of the time there is NO company name, just an email address full of numbers and letters so you have no idea who will be reading the letter. I have sent countless emails always with a cover letter and am lucky that I have gotten 3 responses! I hear this from many other job hunters also. I'm an admin assistant with over 40 yrs experience (which I never mention as that gives away my age). You can't always find out "who is in charge of the hiring." when is the last time you job hunted???
