Thanks!! I found the information very valuable, especially the parts that related to computer literacy since I am a Business Education computer teacher. Every day I try to impress on the teen-aged kids that every where they will go in their future endevors, they will always have a key board in front of them. Unfortunately, many of these kids rather be texting than using the keyboard.

I would just mention that PivotTables and Vlookup in Excel and ,before Pivotcharts, are what employers are asking for alot more on the business jobs i have noticed.

Thanks Ritka,

I was hoping to find in your article skills that are very different from what you listed.

It looks they are oriented to people who sit on their computers the whole day.

I think you are missing a number of skills here that certainly would open many doors to young and not so young workers.

I learned from my experience in Canada that sometimes even English will play a secondary role in one's set of skills. The best example for this is a friend engineer I met in my old company. Her language skills were almost unnecessary when compared to other capacities in Strength of Materials, Design of Machine Elements, Computer Aided Design, Finite Element Analysis, Non Destructive testing and finally the ability to bring designs to life outside of the computer screen by making them with her own hand in a workshop. All these skills are used to create products we use every day. Some of them performing under such conditions their failure would cause human life loss so extra careful is necessary to conceive them and manufacture them.

I hope we can set this type of goals for young people and urge them to follow careers to get more than a secretary position with Excel, Adobe Illustrator and Google analytic or something shallow like a political science degree. Thanks for the highlights anyways.

I'm in Ontario, Canada.

Thanks Ritika, 4 out of the 5 skills you list here I use in my work (1, 2, 3 and 5), all of which I learned on the job in two careers. It reminds me that I still have more to learn in those areas.

Your readers might also use the O*NET Connector to find similar technical skills needed in jobs or career paths they are considering. The Career Key's "Identify Your Skills" article also can help job and career seekers narrow down their list of needed skills depending on their occupation:

Hi Ritika,

Good technical skills mentioned. Something often overlooked is exceptional communication skills as a relevant competency that can position anyone for career success.

Let me know if you are interested in exploring some of our basic tips (www.toastmasters.org) for your next column.

Best,

Hi Ritika, thanks for pointers.

Just a quick thing, I believe you mean codecademy rather than code academy. :-)

Also GIMP is a free (and very good) alternative to Adobe image manipulation products for people who want to learn that kind of thing.

I'm guessing but I would say that learning SQL would be useful to anybody as it's a language used to query databases.

Cheers

For #4: There are a wide variety of "free" Online Language Learning resources at your Public Library across the country. One such language program is Mango Languages.

One click on Mango's Library Locator link and you will be able to see if your library subscribes to

Good luck in job hunting.
