How to Job Hunt While You're Still Employed

You mentioned to keep it quite, however, Im finding most places I apply for want to be able to contact my current employer. I feel if they do I should be upfront about that first but then it might make my current workplace uncomfortable- or like you said, they might start looking for my replacement. Im not really sure how to address this problem. I either tell my current employer Im looking for another job and deal with the uncomfortable workplace and potentially being pushed out before Im ready or get rejected because a prospective employer wants to talk with my current employer. Thoughts?
