As someone who is a recent law school graduate, a cover letter is the most annoying thing ever. I spend so much time writing them, and then the person I send it to never even responds back. Not even a no thanks. So why would I even bother writing one? I'm sorry Ms. Green, but let's be serious here. How many people actually read them? 10%? 5%?

I often will apply for jobs just to test the water and see if companies are even interested in my skill set, if they respond for more information even better. If not no skin. I also have about 3 or 4 cover letters written out with my basic qualifications already listed and basically just tweak a few words to make it look personal enough like I created it just for them. Maybe just changing the job name and date at times is enough. I always keep a copy of what i submitted when you have multiple copies as well as the job description. you never know if they will suspend the search for 6 months and out of the blue they call you and you have no clue what job you submitted to them.
Volume i think is what you need when looking. Get as much out there as possible. I never disclose salary on 1st inquiry but instead stating that I am searching for passion in my next position and money is secondary to true job happiness. Today's economy makes some of us take jobs we don't want and that is understandable to a point but it will pay off if you see a position looks like it is going to realy suck then it probably does. You may get that amazing lead on the interview you have sceduled tomorrow or the one you will not learn about until next Friday.
Remember you are also interviewing them, if the interviewer (if he will be your boss) seems like he is unsure of himself he probably is. If he is disinterested in you on interview day imagine what week 59 will be like. You must have at least some connection with them. Hope this info is helpful to someone and never give up. I have been laid off a couple of times but always recover and sometimes better than before!!

To "Unemployed & Faking Positivity": That advice is for people who end up not applying at all because they agonize so much over their cover letters. The point is to set yourself some limits so that you actually apply.
