This is so important. Especially in these modern times, we can easily get stuck behind a computer. I especially like #8: Request a meeting.

This is an excellent piece which modernizes networking. Of particular importance is your recommendation to avoid the "J" label. Connecting done well--with the thought and preparation you list-- will evolve into a dialogue about mutual interests and industry information. The trick is to have the foresight and patience to build to an opportunity rather than being focused and intense about your need to find new employment or advance your career. It is kind of like dating: a little bit strategy, a little bit trial and error, some rejection and disappointment, and when it clicks....WOW!

You're right! Networking is a word most students don't understand, or consider. I always tell my graduating college students and clients to ask faculty to Connect with them on LinkedIn. Excellent advice -- I particularly agree with #8. Too often, candidates try to make an appointment when there is a job available. You should try to schedule an exploratory meeting where you can introduce yourself (and seeking to get more information about the company...in order to see if it is the environment you would like to work in).

Here are some suggestions to help you be more strategic in your search:

I disagree with number 6. Of course, it depends on the kind of help for which you ask. But I think people enjoy helping others. It makes them feel needed and often superior to the person asking for help. People need to be needed.

Being a good listener is probably the most important. People love to talk about themselves....and they like it when someone takes an interest in WHATEVER it is they are talking about....whether it's business related or not. I have found that the ONE thing people truly enjoy talking about is their health....a recent operation or something of that nature.

I think the "follow-up" is very important. But one of the most important things you seemed to leave out was to THANK whomever you meet with. Especially taking the time to write a personal note or to send a card....via snail mail....makes a huge impression on people.
