Love tip number nine. Being "choosy" about the errands, or any life activity we take on, makes all the difference in our ability to find true work/life alignment. When we counsel candidates at Mom Corps, we stress the importance of learning to organize priorities according to what an individual wants out of life, not what someone else or popular opinion thinks they should want. To find true personal and professional fulfillment, the key is to identify and acknowledge personal familial and professional goals, share them with everyone it affects, and create a plan. Want to commit to running a 5-K with the family by the end of summer and complete a A-priority work project that has been weighing on you? You have to put it on the calendar and phase out activities that are “fillers” (watching TV, spending hours on Facebook, constantly cleaning house).

Bravo! This is a topic that needs to be brought to light! Somehow the workday and workweek have lost all definition. With smart phones and instant access we are expected to be accessible at all hours of the day and days of the week. The idea of a work/life balance is almost laughable. But does that mean we shouldn't fight for it? Absolutely not. As the owner of an executive career coaching and recruiting firm I have had countless clients tell me that there is an unspoken assumption that he/she be available at all times. However, if it is unspoken by the higher ups, is it really expected? I tell clients constantly to be specific when asking about the details and expectations of a position they are seeking. This not only gives them a true picture of what they are taking on, but it also requires hiring managers to know ahead of time what they are expecting of their candidates. If it's not clear, it's unfair to expect it and unreasonable to assume it.

Most employers will not actively protect its employees from burn out or work/life imbalance. However, if employees are intentional they can hopefully head this conflict off at the pass.

Good advice for individuals. Similar advice applies to companies who often lose their way because they have chosen too many #1 priorities. It is far easier to say “yes” and acquiesce than to refuse. But sometimes you should say no and sometimes rejection is the best thing for a relationship. When you do, here are some tips: http://bit.ly/c7EmWK
