One thing I found that sidetracks a lot of aspiring consultants (myself included, when I first started my consulting business) is fear--of failing, of the unknown, of not knowing where to start, etc. The best thing to do is to start somewhere, and do something each day. Your momentum and motivation will snowball as you see your progress. More tips & info about my story at: http://www.StartMyConsultingBusiness.com

Marketing technical expertise and building that business identity is a difficult task. It takes time (a LOT of time) to develop the right skills and make the contacts and connections to truly become visible within an industry. My best advice is to take advantage of free marketing tools like the Technical Experts Directory on NoNovice.com. I've created several useful tools like this to help technical experts get the visibility they need to get their consulting businesses off the ground.

I just read your article and it was very enlightening. I received my MBA in 2005 and I have been self-employed in the wireless communication for about 4 years. I currently own stores but I'm in the process of selling both locations and although I don't have any experience as a consultant. I'm confident my education in conjunction with my experiences, specifically in the wireless industry will enable me to start a successful consulting firm specializing in wireless communication. I understand not having worked for an actual firm makes life much more difficult because I lack some of the valuable industry insight.. but my approach was to market my service to smaller companies but I'm not sure how and what to charge for my services. I'm also interested in some additional marketing advice. Thanks in Advance.
