Not quite sure what Johnnie in KY said, but the unions are past their time. Why should a person be paid $80,000 right out of school to push a button just because he knows someone? The jobs that are most critical to the country should be paid the most, not the ones with the biggest unions! If unions would be willing to settle for what teachers and those in non union positions made, maybe the rest of us could afford to buy American and not be forced into buying from the cheapest. Greed is driving this economy and until people wake up to the fact that they don't need to have the biggest, best, shiniest and most expensive of everything greed is going to continue to push jobs overseas and our standard of living down the tubes and the rest of the world will pass us by.

Let's take on Fedex with the 50+ Delivery. We have many intelligent people in this age group that if we worked together we can do great things. We can decide to fix the economy instead of waiting for the government to do it.

Your cruel and insensitivity are only exceeded by your lack of knowledge. Unions only represent the employees of the company. Corporations are free to to innovate and compete in a free market. A contract between Union members and the company must be ageed upon by each party. That contract is suppossed to be good for both sides. Do you think Unions have a lock on how to negotiate a contract? Of course not, both sides demand as much as possible and agree upon a more moderate version in the end. It is a give and take relationship, much like a contract between two companies. The innovation is how to compete with cheap labor abroad and countries that subsidize their countries product to capture the marketplace. How- ever I believe there is something wrong about Johnnnie of KY statement related to his firing. It could be Johnnie isn't a good negotiator for himself or something else caused the firing. I have a nephew that works for FEDEX for 20 years, and he is happy with his job and treatment by the company. Take your cheap shots at Unions when you understand the parameters involved with allowing both company and worker to prosper in unity. Remember this when you talk about low wages for cheaper products, it could be your wife, daughter or son, Aunt, Uncle, Niece or Nephew, or your best friend, that will be forced to live with that lower income. Why, do people object to lowering the wages and benefits paid to an Investment Banker? Isn't that what they do employees in any other industry. I can't say what a persons work is worth, but I do know that everyone deserves to have a living wage. TL----Tennessee

Let's hope you salted away some of your FEDEX wages, cause nothing is forever. You sound burned out and are looking for some way to trash a good company. A little advice here: do a little self analysis and then move on. Don't try to distroy one of the great innovative job creators in the past 50 years. Just because you got hurt doesn't mean you should try to distroy a company that single handedly created a new sector of the economy while effectively competing against UPS, which in turn caused UPS to become more efficient and competitive. If unions were in charge we would still have telephone switchboard operators and railroad express would be the fastest way to get packages delivered. Can you say "Mabel, ring up the union headquarters for me, sweetie?"

FedEx's Inhumane Treatment!

In May 1998, A FedEx Manager, Tim Cecil denied me time off to attend my Father's funeral in New York. I did not receive a sympathy card from Tim, and no flowers were sent to my Father's funeral. I specifically asked for time off to grieve my Father or to attend the funeral. With emotional pain and tears in my eyes, I had to grieve my Father, John Henry Holt at work. FedEx says, Tim used "poor judgement" to justify their Discriminatory practices at the Elizabethtown, KY station. This was Deliberate! Tim also denied Jose Deleon time off to attend his Stepfather's funeral. Because of my pending lawsuit I was fired on Sept. 25, 2009. I remember Manager, Kevin Hart saying, "Johnnie, I am going to make it short and sweet, you are fired!" This was Wrongful Termination and Retaliation! My work record is 25 years of loyal service, 23 years of Safe Driving and 16 years Perfect Attendance. FedEx is a Cruel, Callous and Defiant company.

I have been in construction for 40+ years. Of that time, the last 20+ in a supervisor position. For the last 7 or so years ( after I turned 55 ), I haven't been able to find anything but short time work. Two years here, a year there, etc.

Each job is the same. Company in trouble, losing work, losing money, needs help to keep from going broke. The last on, after 10 years in business, couldn't even come up with 3 positive job references and NO credit references.

After three years, I had taken the company from being broke, with no work contracts to a viable competitive company with at least 4 ongoing projects, at ALL times.

Finally, when the owner thought he could do without me, I was laid off and replaced by the owners lazy, ineapt, 27 years old son. They were out of business in a year.

Nothing new! I've been through this same scenario at least twice before in these same seven years. What gives? This has gotten rediculas. I'm almost willing to take a job on commission BUT they'd never pay me. One still owes me a $2,000 judgement that was approved by the State of Texas. Judgement, NO MONEY.

I worked for Sorenson Photography for 17 years and was laid off before people after me were hired. My employer was heard to say he wanted younger workers in the studio.He even gave me a glowing letter of recommendation so i know it wasn't my quality of work. He even told me my work was great! I've since learned that the insurance companies charge hundreds of dollars more a month for health coverage than they do for employees in their 20's. (I was wondering why at job interviews they weren't even giving me the time of day, Now I know and no I'm not ugly) Now employers fire or lay off older workers to get rid of the high cost of health insurance and hire younger workers who as I can see aren't as dependable or experienced. The employers also turn to employment agencies so they don't have to pay for employee benefits or keep the employee. Younger workers in the work force aren't noticing this trend and I try to tell them to start saving money now because you never know. Even my nephew who is 42 graphic designer is considered old and my nephew who is 30 is considered old in his work.

People think that just because you are an older worker that you have all kinds of retirement money or savings that you should be able to quit work by the time you are 50 or around there but that's not always the case with older workers. Lots have no retirement or not enough for one reason or another. It seems like a lot of people just don't care about this problem either. I purposely look around when I go out shopping or just in places of business on my errands and look or count how many older workers I see and I'm always disappointed to see the majority are younger workers. Like 10 to 1.

My sister works for an employment agency in California and she sends out well educated, well experienced, well dressed , and great personalities peoples to job interviews and the potential employer calls her back and tells her to send them someone younger. and she informs them that comment is against the law. Discrimination. So then they put it in their job description some job skill that an older person couldn't do to use as discrimination like lift 70 or something that keeps the older worker out but I have to say I've seen young workers in Costco that I could out work any day. Just because they are young doesn't mean they are in shape.

Oh and yes I do believe in God and regularly talk to Him about the work situation but that doesn't mean you're going to get a solution. In fact life as a christian can be much harder because you don't conform to the world and Jesus said 'take my yoke upon you" and I wouldn't say His yoke is light. But there are many other benefits in being a believer that I wouldn't give up for anything.

And Yo Patrick some people don't have the finances to retire already...
