Lynn Johnston Decides Not to Completely Retire 'For Better or for Worse'

Well my weekend was just ruined. It's like losing a member of the family. Lynn's story always seemed to hit home. Hopefully she'll be bored with retired life by next week and get back to the drawing board. Only we readers can retire.

But on a serious note, I wish her happiness and thank her for my morning "fix".

I agree with the thoughts expressed above. For Better or Worse was the first comic I read as well. It was so "real". With the natural circle of life events continuously flowing through it. I could relate to all of the characters. The parents, siblings, children, etc. The evolution of each character as they go through each stage of life was very moving to experience and I will miss it.

Having recently ended a 40 year marriage myself, I understand the need to move on. I am also 60 years old. Having said that, I admit to almost tearing up over finding out that the "family" I loved to read about was moving on as well but without me.

"For Better or Worse" doesn't always mean together forever. It should but sometimes we can't be with someone we love or loved.

My heart goes out to you, Ms Johnston. I am still rethinking who I will be for the rest of my life. I hope the very best for you. Obviously, the financial issues many women our age face after a long marriage ends are not part of your situation but the heartache is the same, no matter what.

Your talent gave me a family to laugh with, cry with, worry with and love with. I wish it would never stop but, just as in life, nothing is forever.

I wish you the very best for the next chapter of your life.

Oh my. My eyes are starting to leak. This comic strip has been so different from the others that I love - the Pattersons have become family. It seems to have so many parallels to my own family. I've laughed, cried, and absolutely loved reading the daily challenges they've faced. I trust you when you say this is the end of their story - it is for better or worse. Thank you so much, Lynn Johnston!

I'm Michael's age and I feel like I grew up with the Patterson kids. I remember eating cereal at the kitchen table as a kid, reading the comics and I always had to read FBOFW. I remember when April was born and I can't believe that she'll be going off to University soon....how time flies! I'm really saddened to find out this morning that this story will be coming to an end and I want to thank Lynn Johnston for sharing her creative genius with us over all these years. I respect her choice to retire the story, but if by chance she ever decides to have others write and draw a continuation, I would love to read it!

I actually grew up with the Pattersons, unlike other comic strips I enjoyed seeing this family grow up as I did. It makes me a bit sad to know that they will no longer get older. I always looked forward to see where their life was going.

Thank you for the memories

good luck Ms Johnston

I have followed this 'strip' closely for several decades. Laughed and cried with the characters, (The loss of Farley still hurts the most). I took it for granted that this 'story line' would always be available. One just simply forgets that this is a comic strip and the Patterson's are not part of my family. I want to see the youngest grow to womanhood and see what sucess she has in the world. I want to 'be there' when Grandpa passes away...there is still so much LIFE left in the strip.

Kudos Always to Ms Johnston!

This comic strip is the first I read every day I have followed it for years. I want it to continue with Elizabeth and Anthony having their children, Michael's kids growing up and I want to know what happens to Elizabeth's sister and what she will do with her life. In other words I do not want flashbacks but a continuation of the entire family If you were going to retire I could understand it, but if not why not continue the story line. Who wants reruns? Not i

Just seems like so many storyline opportunities with the new family that Elizabeth and Anthony bring to the cartoon, and Michael's family, and the futures of newly retired Mom and Dad and little sister to go back in time rather than allow their lives to continue to unfold for all of us who look forward to this syndication...it's really kind of sad. But then at my age, I probably won't remember back that far and it will all seem new!
