Are you kidding: Retirement is the thing of the past for a past middle class person. All the investments that were suppose to go to retires have been swindled by the theifs in the upper class. Now I don't mean all those are theifs but being the age that I am and have grown up in the 50's 60's and early 70's to live like we did back then making 5 6 and if we were lucky 10 thousand a year it would now take 10 times that amount of money or if 2 working 5 times that amount of money.

So to put the above in perspective, a equal income now would be for one person 50,000 per year and two people together would be 100,000 per year. Now tell me who is making that kind of money, yet the prices of almost everything has gone up 10 times.

Let's see how far this ecoomy will bottom out, because the reason it started in the first place is that wages never kept up with the cost of living and our country sould there soul to foreign investment which gutted the middle class which is needed to keep our country going. Enough said.

I'm 45 and had been out of work for almost a year before landing a full time job just this past week. But guess what? I had to take a job that I would have never considered doing in the past and making the same amount of money that I earned 20 years ago. I've gone from being a working professional (Business Systems Analyst, with two college degrees), to now starting work as a "Recovery Associate" - a bill collector. I can't believe that I had to sell my soul to the devil, but it's a full time job with benefits and I support a family of four.

My point is this - everyone is suffering now, regardless of your age. You can't blame "age discrimination" right now. This country is in a depression. My heart goes out to those of you that had expected to enjoy retirement at age 65 - and why shouldn't you? Don't we all deserve a chance to rest after a lifetime of work and sacrifice? But the bottom line is that this country has entered into a depression that is taking jobs from all age groups, all walks of life, all areas of the marketplace.

I am not willing to sink another dime into education. I do think it would be worth the governments money to fund education and job training for unemployed persons. Now if we could just get the government to stop handing out billions of dollars to insolvent companies and divert those funds into rebuilding the workforce, we could maybe stand a chance of shortening the time that we are all unemployed or underemployed.

Best wishes to all - I have the greatist respect for those who have walked before me. Not all of us "young" folk think poorly of those who are older than us.

Having to have readed all the comments regarding factors of age, it is very sad to read about the baby boomers who came into this world after the WWII. Those of us whom are either siting or standing behind our "employment" talk about this also.

Yes, we too are driven to save our pennies, nickles and dimes. Just like the gals who serve you in a resturant. We need some respect and need to have a redirection in our social security system. I've seen here in California where Target Stores have been hiring seniors. Fantastic, how about Retail stores? It doesn't take much to run a cashregister. And there's plenty of curtiesy clerks to help. You can volunteer so much before you are not able to make it because someone has to pay for the gas in the car to get to your destination. Where's the tax break in that? Elementry schools need cafeteria staff and so does your Junior Colleges. Receiptionist is really a basic, simple task also. Just answering phones and greeting incoming staff/clients.

Let's see what else is out there? Are you ready to step out of the box?

I think a person should be allowed to work as long as he is productive in the job he or she was hired to do.

I, personally, worked in the healthcare field as a Regional Director and have been retired now for 10 years and am completely and totally miserable. If I am good enough to do volunteer work in that same field, then I should be good enough to do that same work and be paid. I am healthy, have no serious health problems, still very active, still do basically everything I did when I was working fulltime yet I cannot get out and be hired by a healthcare facility and be paid to do this work. I was in Management over 10 Retirement Centers in a 4-state area and traveled almost on a constant basis, starting up new facilities, training personnel in every phase regarding the care of the elderly and although I am considered elderly, I am not if you compare me to the people who reside in the retirement and nursing facilities. I would dearly like to be back in the workforce but do not know how to get there as no one seems to want people who are already highly skilled in some fields. I feel I would be an excellent addition to some corporation who has such a need and could go anywhere I might be needed but who do you contact and what kind of response would I get? It seems such a waste for someone like me to not be allowed to contribute the knowledge I have to society. I have many skills as I worked in other fields prior to getting into the healthcare field which was prior to my husband's death in 1985. I have experience in Engineering, Oil Industry, Legal, Construction, Insurance, many fields as I worked with my husband until his death and then worked in several different jobs before getting in the healthcare field. My major in college was Business Administration so I feel, at times, my knowledge and experience is just being wasted as I sit and twiddle my thumbs.
