What Do Retirees Do All Day?

I just returned from water aerobics (2hrs). Cleaning out my office, that had become the catch all room. Reading half finished books. A lot of suduko. Finally made it to the new library. Still thinking about volunteering. Spending a lot of time telling myself it is not too late to finish my education. I have connected with one of my neighbors who has also retired.

Most of the retirees in my neighborhood do really nothing at all. They sit at home all day, waiting for the mail to come, not really doing anything. And, ironically, when you talk to them, they are always complaining that they are "so busy."

Lumping sleeping with "personal care" doesn't give an accurate picture. My retired wife and I go to bed at the same time and she continues to sleep while I'm getting ready for work.

Most folks approaching "retirement" age will continue to work. They are generally healthier, more active, and just don't want or can't let go of a paycheck. If they choose retirement (which is an archaic word), they will continue to be productive in other ways. In fact, they may be busier than when they went off to work at a 9 to 5 position.

Leaving the work life is not a "bad" thing. Folks should do what they want. I just think that our society narrows the focus on people when they approach that "magic" age and make assumptions about the population in general. Perhaps you should think about another article that shows that aging is not the rocking chair it once was.

There are many retirees now supporting their laid off children.

I used to write 3000 letters-to-the-editor at a shot. Have the only web site with the TRUTH. In it is the only true story of the fall of the true church, the Worldwide Church of God (Herbert W. Armstrong).

I blog Human Events, Chicago Tribune, Christian Scientist Monitor, US News and World Report, Wall Street Journal and my home state Bismarck Tribune. I read Drudge and World Net Daily. Haven't counted the hours I spend doing volunteer work for God but it's a lot. But I'm like Michael Savage, ignored. It won't last forever. A prophet like Elijah is coming before Jesus Christ returns and before this nation is defeated and goes into captivity as slaves. It might be me.

Retired volunteers support community nonprofits in critical ways by filling ongoing volunteer spots that working and younger volunteers just can't commit to. They also bring a treasure trove of skills and experience and are valuable mentors to nonprofit staff and other volunteers.

If you're retired and are looking for a volunteer gig in your community, please use our Volunteer search tool powered by AllforGood. Go to VolunteerSpot.com and click Volunteer Entrance. Enter your zip code and see where you can get involved. Happy Volunteering!
