401(k) Matches Play Hard to Get

Since my company's plan does not offer a ROTH option within the 401k plan, I have decided I will not participate in the plan next year. The company match that is offered is not large enough to interest me at this time. Also, since the company discontinued the match during the worst of the financial crisis and since I really don't care for the choices I have for investing in the plan, it is not worth it to me. I would rather pay the lower tax rates now and put my money into a ROTH IRA, since I expect taxes to be significantly higher when I retire and need the money.

I have worked at various companies over the years. Only one time out of 10 has the company offered any kind of 401k matching. I took full advantage of the one that offered this but other than that one exception, I was on my own. Most of the companies I worked for were smaller start-ups but even the public companies have been stingy when it comes to matching.
