At age 60 I had $400K saved for retirement. Then my job of 22 years was eliminated. Now, after 2 months of unsuccessful job hunting, I am slowly coming to the realization that I may already be retired and Just not know it. Older, unemployed workers are pretty much invisible.I envision tapping my retirement savings and limping to early, and reduced, Social Security. So much for my American dream

And every bit helps. It's a state of mind.

I expected to see dozens of responses to this article. Instead I found only 1. Remember the old Avis commercials - "We try harder" Americans do try harder when they want to. To get started try here www.debtproofliving.com

The attitude of saving is all you need. It does not mean you can't spend, it just means how you spend has changed a little. Pay the bank first. You'll be surprised at how your attitude changes with just a little MORE saving every paycheck.

Forget the political arguments that make headlines every day. The people in the headlines are fueled by people like you and I who have to act responsibly and provide for themselves. The people in China save upwards of 40% of their paychecks. Current statistics show Americans save very little.

Social security is not the answer. Have a better problem - so much money saved that you don't even care about the social security handout! If you work a little harder you will have more control over you life. And I said work - not torture. It becomes torture when you can't work and the social security can't come close to the income you need when you retire without a good sized nest egg.

Pay off your credit cards, put something in the bank, have patience. You can prepare for the future. Start now. Start now. Start now.
