4 Ways to Stay Employed After Age 50

After being pushed out of a long term Directors position due to corporate cost saving, it has taken me 18 months to land another position. The position offers twice the work load and one-third of the money. Glad I only have a few years left before retirement, if they do not find a way to scam us out of it. You know for the good of masses. It is going to be very very hard for the young people fresh out of college to find jobs to pay down their student loans. Hopefully the USA will wake up before its too late to ever recover.

Older boomers are reinventing themselves. Few grasp the idea of “retirement.” Many use their previous profession as a platform for new work life. Others use their passion as a springboard to a meaningful second act. Boomers are making career changes that foster a sense of personal and social renewal. Many in the boomer generation who were out to change the world in the ‘60s, are now looking for ways to improve it. Some boomers merge paid work and a volunteer life. Other boomers opt for a kind of third stage where they volunteer, mentor and life coach as a way to give back. This is just an example of an optimistic view to "nay-say the gloom-doomers!"

Thanks for the pointers Emily! Older workers who have established seniority over the years have also seen their salaries grow with annual reviews and raises (hopefully!) This can work against them when it comes time to reduce expenses at a company and others are capable of performing the same job at a lower rate. And when re-entering the job market these higher wages are also excess baggage. You make a good point about accepting the fact that what you earn returning to work may be 20% or more less than what you made previously. But it is a job!
