This pardigm shift to a new type of retirement that will include periods of work for most Americans is a positive cultural change. Individuals nearing traditional retirement years have a vast wealth of knowledge and experience which previously was lost as they left the work force. Today these experts have the ability to share their life experiences either through volunteer opportunities or by creating a "work at will" situation where they identify ways to produce supplemental income while pursuing their passions. For some, it may involve a combination of travel and teaching by contracting with a Cruise line to teach or lecture on a skill they spent a lifetime developing in return for free room and board.

With advances in medicine and technology, expanded longevity will provide greater opportunities to experience life on our terms.

I think people are scared to walk away from employment full time right now. It is all about security for most and that means keeping some sort of employment under their belt. For many winding down to part-time employment is just as good as walking away from it entirely.
