As for the two barriers, I like what www.passitto.com is doing to overcome them. Here is why:
1. As for using them sporadically, passitto.com provides an incentive (i.e., money or referrals) for using it.
2. As for using it for leisure, passittocom is aimed directly at exchanging business information.
I think that this is the future of social networking.

Is it impossible to imagine that a kernel of an idea can actually take off, find an enthusiastic reception, and culminate in an earthshaking reality?
Stated simply, I'd like to design and build a mega Alternative Energy Project in the desert, on a scale not yet visualised, involving solar, wind, thermal biogas et al. Ultimately producing energy at levels only spoken and written about but never ever implemented, cause no one really thought it could be pulled off. I think it can be done.
A lot of disciplines will be obviously involved, but right now, the fundamental issue would be to be able to network with a small, but fired-up enthusiasts.So if there are someone with cutzpah, I'd really like to hear from you.

I've been on the Club E Network for a while and can tell you it's a great site with some wonderful members.
Matt, a similar issue exists with social news sites. Sites like Digg and Reddit are too general in nature to be of much use to entrepreneurs. A good niche site to check out is bizSugar.com. It stays focused on news, trends and ideas for SMBs.

Andy is exactly right about Twitter interactions starting as personal and evolving into the professional. This is particularly true for entrepreneurs and small businesses, who have a greater realm of responsibilities and can more easily react to new ideas/concepts/services.
Most people start out slowly, then hit a critical point where their Twittering takes off. (You can see this on most people's graphs on TweetStats.com) I imagine this point is usually linked to a sense of community, or at least one or two other Twitter users. It's fostering newbies to this point that's the challenge.

You start with the leisure, intelligence is shown beyond the boundary and business is there in moments. Think for a moment on the net as a whole, it wasn't but a few years ago that business looked at the net with a wry eye. A website? I don't need one of those. (I can remember Motif) Now I don't think many businesses think that they don't need a website in some form.
What Facebook and Twitter does is two fold, it brings the local back to local and it brings the globe closer if needed. By that I mean now more than ever I can understand why a chiropractor would need to be on Facebook and if you are a product vendor you can gain local support, input, and mediums, while at the same time reaching into international markets on the backs of a global community.
It just takes time for people to make the connections, consensus to start leaning in, and then its a mad rush. Small businesses when looked at fundamentally are still behind the curve, not enough are online. Over time that is changing and they need help, they need more people pushing them explaining, teaching, preaching, the merit of an identity online.
It is coming though. We're starting the education a space at a time.

I think there are a lot of people looking to Twitter as part of their business life.
They are trying to learn to conduct themselves in a manner that will help promote their business. They do become friends with people after interacting with them for a while but almost none of my friends are on Twitter. Its mostly business connections.
