It seem so difficult to gain attention in the media particularly if I am a new business. Sending flyers out, cold calling is not at all what everyone say it is. Putting a small ad in the newspaper seem like a waste of time and money. Any suggestions

an so we all know that media is only paying attention to what is interesting to keep the mind going along with its way of thinking and if you do not fit the mole properly, well, what more do I need to say? As a publicity expert (and a former newspaper editor), I offer the following tips on how to get media attention:

--Promote your expertise not only by blogging yourself, but by posting comments at other people's blogs. When journalists do their online research for articles, they often end up at blogs. They read not only blog posts, but the comments. If they're impressed by your comment, they might contact you.

--Go to http://www.Google.com/alerts and set up a Google Alert for your area of expertise. Then tell Google how often you want it to send you information on what kind of content it finds on your topic. I set up my alerts daily. Each day, you'll get an email from Google with a short or long list of various websites, blogs, videos, news sites, etc. that are writing about your topic. This is a great way to find journalists who cover your topic.

--Now that you know which journalists cover your topic, Google their name and see what you find. You might learn, for instance, that they blog. If they blog, you've hit a homerun. Go over to their blog and start reading it regularly. Then start posting comments every now and then. I promise you, they will know very well who you are if you start commenting. Then, when it's time to pitch them with an idea, they'll already be familiar with your name.

--Comment on a journalist's work. That's the quickest way to get their attention. And you don't necessarily have to like what they write. If you disagree, or if you simply want to shed new light on a topic they've written about, email them or call. Then write a letter to the editor of that newspaper or magazine.

--Offer story ideas that don't have anything to do with you.

--Start posting information about your business on the Craigslist nearest where you live. Lots of journalists lurk at Craigslist looking for story ideas. That's where they often find the low-hanging fruit.

These tips don't only work for start-ups. They work for anybody.
