I know several people who have transitioned from a job to working for themselves, but none who founded a real company. For most of us, that is out of the question, because we don't have the finances, the contacts or the time.
But there are opportunities for creative, hardworking, skilled individuals who can offer unique services to a segment of an industry. As we start up, we develop a loyal following with potential for repeat business and referrals. Self employment is satisfying, engaging and useful enough that some of us don't aspire to anything more than a good living.

Number 6 on the list is that a successful entrepreneur needs to identify a unique Super Sweet Spot which will take a company out of direct competition with industry rivals. A Super Sweet Spot is a total concept designed to serve a specific group of customers with products or services that satisfy their needs. Every element of a Super Sweet Spot, including the products or services the company sells, the hiring of employees and creation of effective advertising, must work together to attract loyal Core Customers who will buy more and thus increase profits.

I have done one-man self employment successfully once. Mine worked for me because it was very small low-investment, low-overhead low risk and I stayed in a niche specialty.
It's hard not to read this story, though, and first think of the guy who recently was written up very negatively here for trying to start a construction business and then losing the house he had been given by "Extreme Makeover - Home Edition". Be careful.
