Mary Lloyd is on the right track. People need to be PLANNING and thinking of the future. The media gets us to focus on day to day and market volatility and we aren't thinking enough of the future.

With average life expectancies well into the 80s and more and more people living to 100 or beyond, you must plan for being retired for at least 25 years or more.

We need to stop acting like it's time to stop doing everything when we get old enough to "retire." What we need is more planning about WHAT DO I WANT TO DO NEXT? instead of worrying about "Am I going to have enough money to do nothing?"

Work is a natural part of living--even lab rates prefer to earn what they eat. The challenge is in creating a lifestyle that honors who you are and what you believe is important in how much and when you work. There's more at www.mining-silver.com on this. PLEASE don't just retire to get away from your job.

Dr. Fraunfelder is the co-author of Retirement Rx: The Retirement Doc's Proven Prescription for Living Your Best Next Life. His book focuses on the non-fiscal side of retirement and it discuss the eight keys traits that you need to have in order to be happy in retirement. Within the book is the Retirement Docs' Quiz. The quiz is scientific, with an alpha coefficient (reliability) of 0.75 and is highly predictive of how well you can expect to do through all four phases of retirement. Even if you're already retired, the quiz will help identify which areas you need to work on to improve and embrace the rest of your retirement. The quiz can be found on-line at www.theretirementdocs.com.

If you wait until retirement to do these things, you have missed the boat (if a cruis was in your retirement plans).

That was a bad pun, but if you wait until you're thinking of retiring to do what is suggested, that is a bad retirement plan.

What is suggested is a plan for beginning a career, not ending it.
