Many people on section 8 also would like to live in the independant living locations but they cant qualify due to very high rent rates!! We are on a fixed income and have pets and are looking for an independant living location and have found that we dont make enough, we are disabled but dont need nursing assistance as we have a provider yet we are always referred to the "assisted" living locations. We deserve to live in a nice location that also offers such things as swimming pools, pool tables, an area for jogging/walking, a place to walk our dogs, etc. Why are we always thrown to the dumps because of our income??? People on section 8 or housing are not second-rate citizens!!!

We live in San Antonio and love it here, but we would like for there to be a location in a nice area of town where we could move to that has all those amenities and still be affordable to low-income families.

ShantiNiketan, a 54 condo retirement community in Tavares, near Orlando, FL is offering a $1,000 per month per person, based on twin sharing of a 2BR/2BA condo, which includes rent, utilities, condo fees, AND FOOD! - all 3 meals a day.

They concentrate on Vegetarian food, but also have a non-vegetarian International kitchen.

This is a non-profit organization.

Many times included in the rental rate are your utilities, cable TV, housekeeping and one or two meals a day. Senior Housing Communities offer many social activities and events that will keep them as busy as they want to be. Many will offer laundry facilities but you usually are responsible for your laundry in Independent Living Communities. In Assisted Living more assistance is offered. Hardly ever is any type of medical care included. If you need additional assistance the Assisted Living Communities can sometimes provide it however, it's usually at an additional cost. Residents will pay caregivers to come in and provide any assistance they need.

Some of the independent is based on section 8. How do they expect people to pay for the apartments. Are these homes or apartments? With independent housing, you do not get meals or medical or anything else. I use to work with a HUD senior building that had both independent and low level assitance living.

Is anything included in these rents? Food, medical care or is this just the costs of the apartment?

My husband of 30 years left me after i was dianosed with breast cancer in 1996. I was off work for 4 years. since i was an RN i went back to work in a doctors office. finally got a position in NC as Health Information Manager. (Got my degree before we split)

Now my car is paid for, i am working on a mortgage so i won my own home. I will be 70 this year and plan to work for a few more years (I hope). yes its hard to recover, but I don't want to be a burden to the one child I have left. If self employement doesnt do it for you you may have to work for someone to make ends meet. If you are healthy you could always mow lawns, if you can physically do it. There are a lot of things you can do to help yourself. don't relie onf the kids as they are having difficulty themselves. I wish you luck.

looks like ill be working for a long , long time. after an unfortunate divorce at 58 and the economy tanking, (im self-employed) looks like ill be working or moving in with the kids. social security is all i have after the disasters of the past year. i wonder how many people are in the same boat?
