If your mortgage rate is low, I would say keep the mortgage and invest the funds you might use to pay it off into stocks that have a history of increasing their dividends. Many of our investments have doubled their dividend payout in less than 8 years and that is our retirement inflation protection.

We've done most of what is being suggested here and it works! We always have a budget in place and review it regularly to make changes as required. Absolutely you have to pay off your mortgage before retirement. We paid ahead for years and bought it down considerable. Then we sold the house and purchased our retirement house outright. If you are willing to move a bit, you can find some great deals on placed to retire.
