The snowstorms that inundated the northeast in the winter of 2009-2010 left about 2 feet of snow on the new shake roof of our townhouse in Alexandria. Our tenant called to say that the gutter was bowed out and only attached at the ends, loaded with ice and drooping. When we drove over to look at it, we noticed that the roof was in direct sunshine and had a heavier snow load than any of the adjacent townhouses. Was this due to the new roof with its special insulation layer? The next morning the tenant called to say that all the snow had crashed down, along with the gutter, downspouts, flag pole support, etc. on top of his SUV parked in the driveway below. His insurance company towed away the vehicle, he and my husband cleared the rest of the snow out of the driveway, and we're waiting for some snow to melt before the repair people can install replacement gutters and downspouts. We're wondering if we should be concerned about roof damage as well.
