One of the elements that is missing in many fitness centers is a program that specifically targets the needs of older adults who need balance, mobility, and strength training. A thorough personalized assessment needs to start the process of designing a program for fall prevention and dynamic aging. Ideally, this type of program needs to be lead by a health care professional with skills in fall prevention training. I have been offering a program in Southern California with great success, however, there is a demand for additional trainers/consultants.

I'm a seven year member of Gold's Gym at the age of 68( Aug.) and I highly recommend to a senior considering gym and fitness facilities that you visit Golds and look for a fellow senior member and ask him or her what they like and/or dislike about the gym. I have a lot of company of senior members who are all over 55 and are pretty serious about our workouts. I go around five times a week and workout for two hours each time. Cardio is probably the most important for seniors but also mix in strength on the circuit machines or free weights if you prefer and lots of stretching in between the exercises.

We recently retired and purchased a home in a wonderful 55+ community. However, while shopping for a home, I noticed many developments claim to have a "state of the art" gym. When I visited, I noticed anything from a small universal and two treadmills to wonderful facilities. Clearly, the term is very subjective- look for yourself.

I'm 58 and just started my retirement. Some things I learned is that sleep is not all that I use to thing I was. I remenber how I would cry if I could not get a full night of sleep. Now I have all the time to sleep that I want. Sleep is a excuse for you not liveing the short life you have. I know you need sleep but stop crying if one night you only get 5 or 6 hours of it. You will have more time to sleep if you stay healthy.
