A low-cost annuity, better yet, laddered annuities, are a rational decision in this investment climate. They could be balanced with a commodity fund to insure against inflation. There are low-cost, financially safe options out there, but DYODD. The real danger is decades of low or slow growth, interest rates, and dividends (cf. Japan). People need to be reminded of the annuity route, aka, pensionizing your IRA. There is a lot of buyer resistance out there, but as I say, it is a rational choice in these times. Just visualize Boomers doing their mandatory withdrawals from stocks for the next 30 years to understand what well might happen to the equities markets.
