Technology Still a Big Disconnect for Older Americans

I found the article very interesting as I fall in the boomer group and my aunt who loves technology is 85. I believe as far as the study shows it also should find out whether these same adults like technology. For instance, my son, 23, is a computer programmer/developer and his older sister, 30, does not like anything to do with technology but has a laptop with internet and is on disability due to a unique disorder. She gets the internet for being able to watch some programs. She can't afford cable.

She will more than likely not keep up with technology. On the other hand my son will always be involved unless he develops alzheimers or some other mental disorder.

As for the size of devices, I agree that some may be difficult for those with parkinsons and the like to be able to navigate. My uncle has this, but does not do anything technological except drive a car and operate the vacuum.

Now as for my aunt, 85, she is using the help of my son and books. She recently purchased the Kindle HD Fire, and knew she wanted the Kindle HD Fire Book for Dummies to go along with her learning. She will look in the book for answers before going to my son, as she does not want to keep bothering him. Which he does not feel that way anyway.

I wrote a blog about it here: http://reviewofkindlehdfire.technodrip.com/

I love my family to death and I think age also all depends greatly on desire when dealing with technology.

At 54 years of age,, after 15 years of working with computers and the internet. During that time, building computers and servers, hosting and programming web sites. I have used and dealt with all types of connections to the internet, from dial up to cable, I could not get a T1 line at the house..

The so-called high speed is a myth, it's all clogged up pipes no mater what you are paying for.

1-1-2012,, I am dropping all of it. I informed all my hosting clients that they are on their own. I refuse to publish anything and refuse to handle any files.

I have pitched 9 computers from my office,, I have dumped 50 domain names, taken down 15 of my own web sites,, some were community web sites. I have changed the high bandwidth connection to a basically worthless DSL plan..

The telecoms or service providers do not want customers. They only want money.

The US Government constantly side-steppes the constitution to the point where it is today,, NO Constitution = No Protection from the corporate owned US Government. Get off the internet NOW.

Have fun, It was cool while the Constitution was working, The internet lasted 20 years before the Corporations ruined it.

"Still a big disconnect" is a huge understatement and doesn't even scratch the surface of why it is better to not get on the internet.
