Should the FED not be regulating PNC before giving PNC $5.56 billion in the bailout?

John of DE,

I read over your response several times in confusion. It wasn't until I read mine that I found the disconnect. I meant to say that I believed that National City was NOT going to make it through with out being acquired. I have not seen any balance sheets. What I do understand though, is that ironically enough, NCC may have had more cash on hand than most banks. Unfortunately for them, the economy and other factors in Ohio, It was going to be a very tough road. I never said that NCC was destined to fail. It is my belief that they were likely to be part of an M&A because, even after the Corsair cash infusion and repeated analyst reports stating NCC's high capital levels, consumer confidence never seemed to rebound.

John of DE, can you explain in detail why National City was NOT going to make it through without PNC buying it? We'd all like to know since you seem to know all about cash flow and balance sheets.

Thanks from us dummies who don't get it.

Matthew,

Can you explain how you know that NCC was going to make it through this crisis without being acquired? I would be particulary interested to know how many balance sheets and statements of cash flow you have analyzed about this company, and how they looked compared to its peers.

Thank you.

McCain is only jumping in on this to woo Ohio voters. He is fanning the flames of uneasy times for a lot of people. It is HIS deregulation that, while not the cause, is a very large contributing factor to the National City "failure". "No Doc" loans, no oversight all part of McCains philosophy as well as his great american hero, Ronald Reagan. Ohio voters should come out in waves for Obama to punish McCain and his fellow deregulators. I would like to know more about the decision making process too, but NCC was going to make it through this crisis without being acquired by someone

NCC was pressured into the deal. Someone's pocketing a lot of money in order for this deal to happen. Listen to the earnings conference call 3 days prior to deal announcement. Management wasn't concerned about the company going under. Follow the money...

Senator McCain is a powerful member of the congress that he wants to investigate whatever he wants investigated.

There's nothing stopping him from heading the investigation.

Corporations, of course, are lining up for the bailout money. Elect Obama and let him appoint the administration of this so it does not become a giveaway to corporate entities as opposed to a help for this country.

As for McCain, send him back to the Senate from where he can "oversee" all he wants.
