For the third consecutive year, sales representatives, technicians, accountants or finance staff, and machinists are among the 10 hardest jobs to fill in this country, according to a Manpower survey of 3,000 U.S. employers.

From Manpower:

Top 10 Hardest Jobs to Fill, as reported by U.S. employers for 2008, are:

  1. Engineers
  2. Machinists/Machine Operators (10)*
  3. Skilled Trades
  4. Technicians (4)
  5. Sales Representatives (1)
  6. Accounting & Finance Staff (8)
  7. Mechanics (3)
  8. Laborers (9)
  9. IT Staff
  10. Production Operators

Note that companies aren't hiring just anybody for these positions. Melanie Holmes, vice president for Manpower North America's World of Work Solutions, says that employers are looking for "employees who have the soft skills, work ethic, and culture traits that fit their company," adding that companies are "taking more time to find the right fit, even for these hard-to-fill positions."
